Tuesday Taper

BIKE: ~30miles in 1hr 45mins. Main set was 2x17 mins at 75%, then 3x8.5 mins at TT effort. I did not reach TT effort, was getting unfocused.

RUN: 3 miles in 30 mins. Afterwork. Slogfest. Awful. No Pep. No life. Damn near walked it. I had a long day at work, but I think the real culprit is one of two: 1) dehydrated since yesterday's swim (I forgot to bring my water bottle to swim and work!), and only drank 1 bottle in the 2hr ride today. 2) weather. I've heard from 3 others this evening who also said they had tough runs, one blamed humidity and other blamed wind. Both were bad, but I'm betting the reason #1 was more of a factor for me.

Why did I keep running? Why not walk? Because I told myself that those 3 miles will come back to me on Sunday at the end of the marathon. I will feel dead on my feet, my legs will weigh a ton, and my motivation will suffer. I kept running today because I knew I'd want to keep running then and I knew that walking a short run today wouldn't build any confidence for me.

So I called this post the Tuesday Taper, and it sure doesn't look like a taper, does it?? This run was a sharp reminder that I've got to plan my week carefully. No extra fitness will be gained, I won't run any faster, and I won't do myself any favors by training hard this week. I've been planning for this race since December, now is NOT the time to blow it. I have built a spectacular (for me) aerobic base this spring, trust it! Rest of the week: Weds swim and easy bike; Thursday 4 mile run with group; Friday swim; Saturday rest; Sunday RUN.
