RUN 6 miles in 57 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 9.2 miles
I set out with little hope for the Garmin to work as expected, and sure enough it read HR numbers too high for reality. I was going down hill and the number was increasing. Resetting the HR monitor, keeping my clothing away, walking, going down hill....nothing seemed to help. After waiting and waiting and waiting for it to reset while near the brewery I turned it off for the rest of the run. F^cker.
I later looked online for a Garmin chest strap and found someone in Wentzville selling the exact same 235, color and all, on Craigslist. Dammit. I love this thing, guess I gotta contact Garmin and see if they have suggestions. I've been saying that for the past two weeks. I save today's run, all 1.3 I tracked, for evidence. Haven't sync'd it yet.
The run had such flat energy. Like I didn't even want to be doing it. So why was I doing it? I love to run, and I do feel better afterwards. I'm glad I did it. That's why, I guess.
Last day of February, I've spend my free time today planning out March goals. Have many the same and some new. I really want to kill off the Blerch. Hate that little f^cker too. Ash Wednesday tomorrow, March 1st, rain overnight, lots of little coincidences and I just love stuff like that. If it was a major moon phase I'd probably convert to some catholic-like, water worshiping, moon religion of my own creation.

Was Gonna swim, biked instead
SWIM 0 yards
BIKE COMMUTE 14 miles
I woke up and was on schedule to swim, but after getting cold while walking the dog I chickened out. In the end, most of the day went this way. It just seemed like such a struggle all day to do anything. I thought taking Saturday off might help with this low energy. Instead of swimming, I had more breakfast and did my 5 mile TFG bonus loop on the way to work.
The flat energy left me moody, hungry, all day. Is is the fat adaptation thing I'm trying? I'm a few weeks into this, not expecting it now.
I looked at training peaks and found that today would have been my 10th swim this year. For some overly optimistic reason I thought I was coming up on 20. Ha!

Saturday off, Sunday run
Sunday RUN 10 miles in about 1:40
I took Saturday completely off, didn't even ride to work. Really helped that it got COLD and WINDY out. Yuck. After a mostly full day at work, I met with TH, her birthday is coming up (and I just realized on Tuesday that I didn't send her a text for her bday YESTERDAY). We chatted, I miss that!
Sunday I had the option of running with TV but he wasn't going out until 1pm. Probably some Mardi Gras sleep-in, haha. I instead ran to work and back, all I had to do was check mice. I got mad at the Garmin, didn't work on the way in much at all and I deleted the data. On the way home I realized the loss of 'data' and kept it. I tried resetting the HR monitor but it only worked for a little while.
The run felt great, I kept it easy, and yes my hip was still hurting a bit. I came home to new hip stretch and strength exercises that I think I should be doing before the run? See how that goes.

Got an extra swim in
SWIM not sure because TP.com is down and I'm writing this days later. But I think it was 1200y of mostly drills
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles
I'm behind on this! I usually do this daily, but I'm out of the habit. Maybe because I haven't set clear training and racing goals yet? Or because I'm focused on the Chrysalis writing?
PG and I shared a lane, if I'm remembering things correctly. He told me about some of his injuries and potential surgeries. I like seeing people I know there, motivates me.
I did 25y drills, these seem really short but they do keep me focused. Catch up drill (realized part-way in that this encourages front quadrant swimming), fingertip drag drill, breathing drill, then a build. I keep reading that these drills are more important than swimming. Better be!

Thursday in which the garmin worked!
RUN 6.3 miles in about 57 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
A great run, chatted with EW and made crazy plans for March. OK, not that crazy. Mostly around time saves, nutrition, etc. Just goals :)
Wonderfully warm morning, the Garmin worked great, the dog walk was calm, LC was driving through the park and caught up with us near the end of the walk, I got home on time, and got to work on schedule. :)

Got my swimming T-pace
SWIM 900 y in just under 30 mins, T-pace test
BIKE COMMUTE 12.4 miles, to pool and some extra
The first goal of my swim plan is to get my T-pace. Three 100's with 20s rest: 1:54, 1:58, 2:01 for an average of 1:57. I can only improve from there... PG and I shared a lane today, really enjoy seeing a friend like that.
I had a goal of tacking on some extra bike time, I didn't get as much as I wanted but I did just goal for "some". It was a wonderfully foggy morning, the ride to the pool left my eyelashes wet and my helmet dripping. Had to take my sunglasses off!
Haven't gone into this much yet here, but I'm once again trying for fat adaptation. I'm now up to 55% or more calories from fat. I've almost finished a No Fruit February. But I'm not yet down to 50g carb per day. Not trying that hard, and not sure I need it.

Hippy run
RUN 6.1 miles in 62 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 9 miles
Haha, the new Garmin says my ride is not quite 9.5 miles round trip, so I gotta start adjusting my inputs.
I'm getting better running with the Garmin HR, I'm now almost certain that I should wait for the "HR Ready" instead of thinking it will catch up as I'm running. Once again around 1 mile it started ramping up my HR readout, and by 1.5 miles I was beating away at 160+ beats per min. Yeah, Right. I was barely breathing.
Turn off HR monitor. Turn on. Didn't wait, ramped right back up. Turn off, Turn on. WAIT. That worked. Stayed under 120 for the rest of the run. I'm pretty sure that if the HR is not dialed in it will get confused with cadence. That seems a reasonable explanation.
But the real news is my left hip. Around mile 5 the pain migrated down into my femur and hit my knee. Not a good feeling. What should i do?!

Friends at my swim: It'll come back
SWIM 1200 yards in 30 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles
Another gorgeous morning, OMG this is sooooo spoiling. My neighbor's yard has crocus peaking up! It's also nice that every morning I get a few more minutes of sunlight so I can leave for the pool and walkies earlier. Although today I didn't leave until 7:20! Goal was 7:00.
Once at the deck, I was surprised and happy to see SM and NK from Evolve! Got to catch up with NK, her med school news. She's also been out of training due to schooling, she reminded and encouraged me -- that it will come back. Then from another late fellow SLTC member PG, chatted with him briefly. Didn't get to the water until 8am.
My goal today was to get up to 150's after last week's 100's. So I did S-P-K-S 150's, with the second swim as 3 'pushed' 50's. Felt great and finished in goal time by 8:30. Felt good to push a little. I've noticed on Saturday's ride that I felt the urge to find the aerobars. It is coming back to me.
It was already warmer out for the 2nd bike ride, I was overdressed. And I'll be overdressed for the ride home too. Yay!

Weekend roundup
Saturday BIKE 80 mins, about 18.5 miles
Sunday RUN 57 mins, 5.1 miles
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
The new Garmin is generating some data, lots of it surprising. First off, let me say that this weekend was AWESOME weather -- in the 70's! Sunny wonderfulness. I had to work both days, but made the best of it.
Saturday. I did a 1hr ride to work including 2 of my 5-mile loops in TGP. I was surprised to see that in the 60 mins I only got 14 miles?! Peak speeds in the park were 18 mph, but they weren't sustained. I didn't track laps, that would have smoothed the data and fixed the averages. The ave HR was 107, max 162. Moving time 1:04. So a surprise in how my bike speed isn't smooth yet. Set that goal.
Sunday was a foggy morning run around the LP area. As has been the norm, the HR climbed and climbed and around the 20 min point it was 160-170. I was able to mouth-breath, so I know that wasn't right. I tried turning the HR monitor off, I'd read that doing that can help. Tried it once, HR went right back up. Tried it again, and FINALLY I got numbers like I expect: low 120's. The HR graph shows the last half of the run completely different.
I have the run set to lap at 1 mile: Pace Ave HR Max HR and Ave Cadence
PACE AVE MAX CAD
1 11:30 137 164 167
2 12:15 145 173 163
*3 11:35 126 176 165
4 10:55 120 138 168
5 9:35 125 132 171
5+ 9:34 130 132 172
(this is the lap I reset the HR monitor)
The ave run cadence stayed in the 165-172 range, even as I sped up. So that's a nice set of data FINALLY. Once I reset the it seems I stopped what might have been a cadence lock? It was a simple fix.

Summary of past week
Friday BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
Sunday RUN 4.5 miles in 50 mins, aiming for MAF HR
Tuesday RUN 4.5 miles in 50 mins, same
Thursday RUN 6.3 miles in about 60 mins
Friday SWIM 1700y in 45 mins, repeated 100's in 2:03!
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles
Went home this past weekend to help with the bakery while mom recovers from surgery, and while she and dad come to STL for his appt. Oh, the irony of me being up there while they are down here! But it worked out in the end, I got to spend dedicated time with my sis and they got to spend the two days as they wanted to over valentines day. I got to make love bug cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries, pizza sugar cookies, and more more. Yay!
I did what I could for the week, Took more of a rest instead of taking time from family.
For the running, it was up to the school road and back, trying for the MAF HR of <139 .="" 1.5="" about="" an="" and="" at="" back="" bring="" by="" changing="" cofoid="" compensations="" do="" down="" easy="" effort="" excuse="" for="" form="" had="" hard="" have="" hill="" hmm...me="" hr.="" i="" injury="" is="" it="" just="" latter.="" ll="" me="" miles.="" my="" of="" or="" p="" part="" point="" pretty="" raised="" really="" run="" seemed="" slow.="" slow="" that="" the="" thinks="" this="" to="" until="" up="" warmed="" was="" what="" wonders="">
The new Garmin seems to be accurate enough, at least it trends correctly. Can't blame the Garmin for my running to fast for the HR goal.
The swim on Friday was my get-back-on-schedule swim after missing Monday and Wednesday. I did my favorite warm up of 100's S-P-K-S then 2x [4x100 swim, 100 choice] and timed the 100 swims at 2 mins to 2:04! Yikes! I checked my PR log and saw a 1:41 as a PR. So I've go nowhere else to go but faster? :)
Thought of this workout yesterday after meeting with LC to deliver a cupcake to her (she missed the Thursday group bakery box), she mentioned her St Peters Masters group and swimming 100s on a 1:40. That includes a 10 second rest!! My rest today was 30 seconds, so I guess I was doing 100s on a 2:30. Hahaha, but my goal wasn't speed it was steady and good form, as a problem I'm having as I get back into swimming is maintaining good form as I fatigue. Not that I ever have great form to begin with.
The weather this weekend is high 60's maybe even in the 70's! Might even be 70F for my ride home in an hour. Wow. Unfortunately I'm coming in to work to make up for my days off this past week. But I'll get what I can out there. 139>

Freakin' COLD, WTH?
RUN 6.3 miles in just a squeak under one hour
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
Monday was 65F, today was 21F. Yuck. Yesterday afternoon it briefly snowed! We were at the southern end of a storm moving across the midwest.
The run felt good. I turned off the beep alarm on the garmin and used vibration only because it was a group run. And because of that I didn't really follow my MAF goal. I just ran and the three of us (me, IT, and 'new' runner MaeZ who works at Sigma!) kept an easy pace. MaeZ (code named, obviously) has a vivoactive, we talked garmins :) And science.
The garmin seemed to be more accurate, or at least in range. Many times when I peeked at it I saw 150s-160s. The final exported graph shows a rapid upshoot on Skinker Hill that never abated. Still learning.
It's supposed to warm up, but not today. 35F the high today, this weekend in the 60's, but I'll be home at the bakery so I won't be as warm. Ah, February.

Morning as planned!
BIKE indoors 45 mins, mileage a guess 12 miles
SWIM indoors, lol, 30 mins and 1200y
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles
Stuck to it this morning and held to plan. Bike, walk dog, bike to pool, swim, bike to work. All before 9am. Score! Felt better about today than yesterday.
The bike had a few 8 min repeats at 75%. The swim had 4x150's as swim, pull, kick, swim. The goal was to extend my intervals while keeping form, I tend to lose form around 100 y right now. I'm overthinking the swim, each length gets a new focus and by the time I hit the other wall I'm focused on something else already. But I'm happy to be building distance, if moving from 100 to 150 is "building".

Morning plan all to hell, but Garmin behaved
RUN 6 miles in 1:03, ave HR 122
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 (to be updated?)
My plan was to bike indoors then run. 50-60 mins of bike, then 35-40 mins of run. But upon seeing the temps still at 60F I realized I couldn't ride indoors! But it was dark and rain was imminent, so that excludes biking safely. So what happened in the end? I only ran?!
I farted around the house all morning, checking on the toilet repair (supply line valve drip after replacing wax ring on Sunday), walking the dog, eating a pre, then a run-stretch-shower, then a M1 then a more M1 before finally leaving the house.
I ran in shorts!! Could have worn a short sleeve but glad I didn't as the rain got cold. The weather blew in about 30 mins into the run. I rolled up the sleeve to see if the tech shirt caused any issues.
First quarter mile....very few beeps from HR alert...yay...next half...a few beeps but all in the 140-145 range...I consider that OK....mailed a letter, kept going, and the rest of the run went that way. In fact, at 20-ish minutes in my HR dropped to under 120 and mostly stayed there. The change around 20 mins was an amazing drop, maybe the rain or some sweat changed the readings? I know I warm up after 20 mins, but still, the graph is shocking.
The rain was pleasant but getting cold. My plan for 4 miles turned into 6 once I realized I probably wasn't going to get a ride in. Towards the end I picked up the pace to see how the HR responded. At this point in the run, I still didn't know the cadence was being tracked so I didn't pay attn to that.
My pace increased, cadence increased a bit too, late into this the garmin HR went up back to the high 120's. So I'm still learning. I'm not sure if the HR drops in the graph is stoplight stops or misreads. It's hard to run at such a slow pace, but here hours later it's like the run never happened, I feel relaxed and not tired.
A few things to note. I'm eating too much before these workouts to keep my stomach from growling. Need to alter. And my left hip hurt with this run, the change in form from running slower? And my low carb experiment continues, my energy isn't zippy but is it ever lately? I quickly graphed my carbage since January 1st and found that I've dropped from 150-190g/day to 50-70g/day. That doesn't include the kombucha, and I'm not a perfect logger. But it's a trend.

Monday swim is a habit
SWIM 1700y in 45 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles
Stuck to my goal and got this done, my longest swim so far this year. That's not saying much.
I stuck to 100's for the WU and CD, then did a 1000 Loco 25-50-75-100 then back down. My form and endurance really start to fall off at 100y. Sad to say. So I did the 100's as swim-pull-rest-swim-pull. When pulling I would try bilateral breathing. And I'd make one of the loco intervals a focus on form. My form pretty sucky right now. It's early!
Had fun watching an older guy who looked like he might have got lost in the Y facility and ended up in the deep end of the pool. He jumped in and hung on the wall as the lane swimmer nearly swam right into him in surprise. I know that feeling. She gave him a look, he said 'we're gonna have to circle' and I thought this might be interesting to watch. But to my surprise, his lack of goggles and cap said nothing about his swim ability -- he closely tailed the female swimmer and had a great form! It's like the equivalent of a kacki-shorts wearing guy showing up for a run and everyone wonders what he's doing there, then he crushes it. Love it.
The day was gorgeous -- 60F!!
Still watching the Garmin, the activity tracking is not set up yet so it's counting it but not uploading to garmin connect on the web. The HR measures seem accurate enough, maybe a little high for resting.

GRRRRRRRR GARMIN
BIKE indoors 30 mins, 7 miles?
RUN 6.1 miles in 1:05, attempt at MAF
Attempt at MAF HR, which is 139 for me. 180 minus my age. My Golden Garmin was supposed to be my Golden Gateway into this, and all it did was F with my head.
Ave bike HR was 111. I went 0.2 mph ave. Ha!
After the bike I walked the doggie, then my run. I was already a bit mental for some reason by this point. So it didn't help that my HR alarm just beeped beeped beeped beeped allllll through the run. UGH. No way was my HR 180+ for any of this. I got tense. Mental. Uptight. Tried to be calm, but forcing a 'calm' breath probably deprived me of O2 if anything. I stopped, watched HR drop to 152, then climb back up again. I walked, watched it drop then go back up again. UGH.
Tried tighter strap. Tried left arm. Tried ignoring it. Fail. Fail. Fail.
So I'm writing this Tuesday, when I had the chance to upload this info for analysis. I spent yesterday grumbling and googling to figure out WTF is going on. A few things learned googling.
The garmin can get confused with cadence (it measures cadence, I didn't know that?! Cool!). It can get confused by tech materials creating static.
On Tuesday I can see that pace and HR closely overlapped so it was reading something and followed trends even if it wasn't accurate. But overlapping with cadence suggests that is maybe what it was measuring? Do I run at a 180 cadence? It seems to make sense. One way to test it would be to walk really fast? Would that lower my HR.
By the time I finished the run, I was thinking about selling the thing.

Indoors with the new garmin
RIDE 80 mins, 22 miles?
I still don't have the bike computer on the Bird fixed up, new battery is on my list. I followed the intervals in the training plan for some guidance but was more fixated on the garmin and the heart rate read out.
The Garmin tracks this as and "Other", maybe I should get an indoor cycling app/widget/thingie. The GPS tracking is just squiggles, haha! The ave HR was 105. Seemed low?
What am I gonna do with all this data?!
Got to see TH today :)

My new Garmin has arrived!
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5
WasGonna do some yoga in the morning but I forgot (honestly!) to set my alarm and I slept in.
Later in the day, right before I usually leave, my new Forerunner 235 showed up in the mail! Dang that came fast, I ordered it on the 1st of Feb and it's already here. WHOOP! I'm so excited for it. Stayed late at lab to charge and configure.

Cold Thursday run
RUN 6.3 miles in 58 mins, about a 9:12 pace
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
Yesterday the temps were mild, mid-40's. So when I let the dog out this morning I expected it to be a little warmer than the 29F on the weather station. Add to it a brisk wind...you get a cold morning. The run was great, ran mostly with CS and IT. My energy a bit flat, might be the diet macro changes? But running wasn't the issue, motivation to run was. But it's not like I wouldn't have run, well, hmmm, see this past Sunday...
The cold feeling continued, went home to foam roll and shower before walking the dog! Then my commute was cold too, I think once the idea of cold gets in my head then it's all just cold.

I didn't forget, I remembered!
BIKE 40 mins and maybe 10 miles?
SWIM 43 mins and 1500y
BIKE COMMUTE 13 miles
What a morning. First off, Welcome February and new goals! One of which was to hold to a pre-planned morning schedule that included a bike, a swim, and a commute. The bike was short, not sure how short because I didn't have the needed battery for the bike computer, and after the dog walk I was 15 mins behind schedule. I take off and get a mile from the house when I realize I didn't have my bike lock for the pool
Turn around. Go back. Didn't skip the swim. Didn't get mad. Didn't let it get to me. ProBee! I was only a mile away, so I framed it as I remembered before I was two miles away, got to see Sugar again, and got an extra 2 miles of ride.
Then at the pool I got halfway down the steps when I realized I forgot to turn the lights off on the bike. Back up the steps, past all the seniors drinking coffee in the lobby, joke with the woman behind the front desk. I framed it as, at least I remembered before I was undressed or wet.
Geez what else was I going to forget today? I'm distracted with the new Feb goals, not many changes from January but apparently enough. The bike was 3x3' ILTs and 15' TT. The swim was 5x (100S,100P, 100K) instead of the prescribed 200's and 300's. My form falls off too fast for those distances right now. I'm being patient with the ILT drills and swimming. Picking something to focus on for each 50y interval. Reminding myself that this just needs some time.
I miss running, but not terribly much. I commented to TV today at lunch that I usually run long on Wednesdays so it's different to not run. It's a good change, and like I said I don't seem to miss running all that much really.
Ordered the new Garmin just a few mins ago!! Got the marsala red :) If they had a GOLDEN color I would have selected that one!
ETA: Hit the threesome on the bike commute home -- forgot to put on my bike shoes and didn't realize it until I went to hop on Puppy outside the building. Ugh.
