Masters swim and Minimalist running

SWIM:1850-1900y in 1hr
RUN: 4.15 miles in 35 mins

I made it to Masters! I was convinced to go by another club member, I'll go if you go type of thing. On the drive over, I enjoyed thinking about just how powerful a promise like this is. The peer pressure of triathlon, and it's a good thing. In the end, 4 of us were there. Sure does help to know people in your lane and the next. No competition, no comparison. Just companions.

As always, I seeded myself into the slowest lane. There were 4 of us--one my peer pressure friend and two others new to me. Me and TB swam at a similar pace (with her a bit faster than me) and the others swam at a slower but similar pace to each other. So we were divided up, me and TB do 300, while the others do 100. And this cause no problems all, how many other group activities can you say that different paces and abilities are just welcomed as they are, and encouraged all the same? Although I'm not sure the faster lanes would have welcomed this (a little more competitive at their end of the pool), I enjoyed it.

4x100, 3x300, 6x50kick, or an approximation of such. Previous Masters sessions left me swimming in a panic trying to keep up. I still swam with a bit of panic--I'm just gasping for breath--I was able to just focus on ME and work on that. A recent club article addressed this (how convenient!) and I think it applies to me--I'm not relaxed. Something to work on. CH didnt have any specific pointers for me today, just that I looked strong. A swimmer sharing my lane asked if I had ever swam competitively. What am I doing to fool these people?

The run was going to be right after the swim, but there was a fresh layer of ice down. So I waited until lunch when the sun had a chance to work on it. By then it was sunny and 34F. I finally got to test the new Kinvaras! I had them near my desk at work, and a few people commented on how "pretty" they are. :) Yes, they are, but I think their function supercedes form her. I had one fellow runner recognize them, and I was happy to hear yet another positive review of the shoes. As the day went by, I was getting more and more excited for this run! How would the shoes feel? Was I really running without my heels before? Would this hurt? Would lighter shoes really feel faster? Couldn't wait to find out!

They do feel faster! And it didn't hurt! And I was using my heels just a little. But I held an easy 8:26 pace and ran longer than expected. I could feel my calves working a little hard around mile 3. The bottoms of my feet were getting unhappy too, the metatarsels not as happy with the low cushioing, but other than that it was great.

Sounds like my Monday schedule has a good plan: Masters swimming and Minimalist running.
