RUN 10 miles in 1:45:39, ave HR 141 and ave cad 169
Took this idea from SO (who didn't invent it, but still...) (and who will not hear what I did as he wouldn't like it I'd bet) to get up early and get training in before the heat of the day started. He does bike rides getting up at 2am. So I slept in to 3:15 or so. I felt OK, went to be early, and slept great. This might become a thing I do more often.
My gut wasn't on schedule though, other than that orange, potato, half a powerbar, and out the door. Camelbak without the bladder, water bottle, headlamp, and testing my purple water cooling towel. Felt gear-heavy, very ultra-ish. About half mile in I realize I'm still wearing my blue 2016 Adrenalines! Forgot to change! So back to the house after a BP loop, and took advantage of this stop to let my gut empty. I guess it realized I was being serious about running early, lol.
Back out, up Jeffy to Arse, to TGP for a TGP 10-miler. I was immediately hot, sweating, dripping even. Is this good because it's head adaptation, or does it mean it's just hot?
I varied the route a bit, this time north side of the park to MOBot, up around street along I44, around the Bug Store (stopped to look at wares and enjoy the christmas-type lights they have out), back along MOBot, then weavy-windy around west end of park until I closed in on 8 miles. Then home.
My left hip was sore! Muscular, I think, a glut muscle. I see Dr L next week. This has me wondering if it'd be better to delay registration for the Badger 100K until I talk to him? Then twice today I've been asked about this next race and I'm saying "I plan to register this week". Then now my hip feels OK here at lab. What's the deal?
Definitely more hip PT for one. See how tomorrow feels. Then decide on registration.
Made a point to eat and drink lots after the run. Even laid down for an hour and tried to nap, also part of the plan.
Leave soon for an appt with the cardiovascular nutritionist. I'd thought about ending with her after this appt, Dr B set this up for me and I feel a bit of guilt in not following his other advices, so how would it look if I quit following this? See how it goes, and I'll report back.

"Don't cut it short"
RUN 5.75 miles in about an hour
COMMUTE 13.8
Solo run at the track, BE out of town. Not sure if MikeS and/or LevA will join someday? Or IT? Come on guys, circles are fun!
WU 1 lap walk (not in the math) and 2 lap jog
MS 1 lap, 2 laps, 3 laps, 4 laps, 3, 2, 1 (RI walk about 100y, not in math)
CD none
Post title overheard from the soccer team, a coach I think, telling the girls to not cut short the shuttle runs.
Another bad math day. Before I left for the track I counted, on my fingers of course that up the pyramid would be 10 laps or 2.5 miles. Then I thought if I do a pyramid, with 3 laps WU and 3 laps CD I'd get the goal 4 miles. But all along planning to run up and down the pyramid. Duh.
Beautiful morning, hot and heavy. The sprinklers were on for awhile. The girls soccer team was out, first time I've seen them. My workout looked better. And longer. haha.
Felt great, HR a little high during the intervals at 150-155. So instead of speed, I focused on form. Laughed at the idea of doing a 10 miler here tomorrow, how awful that would be. Then of course debated if I should run 8.25 tomorrow instead of 10 because of the extra today...or run less Thursday...geezus just run.
Last night I was working on hotels for upcoming races. I want to pay for the hotel mom reserved in Annawan for Hennepin 100, but she said to put the $$ to the Wisconsin hotel.
I'm going to say that Wisconsin is a "go" for me. Then this morning I wake up to a Friday 5 mile preview run for the Shippey. Do I need to be registered for that, or can I just run? Hmmmm.....
Either way, I have to get my hotels lined up. And I've started pack lists for Wisconsin.
This morning I daydreamed about doing IMWI 2020.
Heard from the vet -- ShoogaBoo seemed to have a bacterial infection. One NFA was "non-lymphoid" with bacteria, the results weren't too clear since another vet was reading someone else's notes. I go back next week. Regardless of the details, the swelling is greatly diminished although she's still not eating readily unless some chicken broth is added.

Solo in TGP, and rethinking my 100K?
BIKE 20 miles in 80 mins, TGP
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
BE out for the holiday and family in WI, so on my own with music to entertain me. I'm faster with him because I'm pushed, but I held some great intervals today!
17:09 ave HR 129
16:55 129
16:46 128
Yay! Felt good, kinda strained after this past weekend's heat and/or flu thing going on. Gawd I hope I don't become heat-sensitive or some shit like that. I still don't have the AC on in the house, the first floor is 77F and the second floor is LO. Haha, the battery. But I'm OK with it, not bothering me.
Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear back from the vet on Sugar's dx. Given the reduction in swelling under her ear/jaw I'm going to surmise that the ear infection (or some infection sensitive to the ear drops and/or the oral antibiotics) is the root cause of the swelling, and I expect to hear that the fine needle aspirate reveals an activated lymph node. That's a good thing! But is not confirmed. Once I know I can sign up for my 100K in early August. I've been debating this.
The D2D race really knocked me back. Took 1 week of almost no training, and potentially left me sick. I'm not sure how tomorrow's run will go, and I might find I'm still not fully back on track. My training plan has me 50 miles this week, 50-55 the next, then 18 miles resting, then 100K, then rest, then back up to training levels.
I definitely take SO's advice to "shut it down for a week" now. Not that I didn't take it last week, but I certainly mentally fought the idea and felt lazy for it. But back to the 100K --
Is doing a race like this good for me, or will it be more of a set back in training?
Pros: I need the practice over that length of time to prep for the 100.
I need the nutrition practice, and shoe test for distance
It's a confidence builder for the 100 miler
Cons: Expensive, maybe with travel
Wears me out
Potential for injury or mental "injury"
My race options are currently:
Badger 100K in Wisconsin
Pros: flat simulation for Hennepin, cooler weather than STL, family visit,
Cons: $$$ for hotel and gas, board dog
$$$ 190 registration, $120 hotel, ~$200 for dog
Shippey 100K near Antire Park
Pros: local, no hotel and one night boarding, 6pm start with night run
Cons: Fucking hills, I compared the Strava segsments and they simular to Chubb bluff, night run potential for unjury, hotter than WI race
$$$$: 160 registration
Self-supported local 100K on Katy
Pros: free!, flat, could pick the better weather day
Cons: won't simulate race effort, lonelier, freedom to loaf and skip out with mental excuses
$$$$: zippo monies involved
So...... money is my hold up for Wisconsin? That's it? I have an appt with Dr S that morning, just need to drop dog before the appt, have the appt, and drive up to Wisconsin (stewing the whole way I'm sure about the appt!).

Sunday rest, no 6 miler for me
Woke up feeling miserable again, took the day off. See previous post for some resting HR data. Drank lots of water, stayed mostly around or in bed all morning, my HR overnight was 60s while bed time after some water was 50s, then by mid day started feeling much better. Even thought about a run or maybe a bike ride. JFC.
But SO said it's too hot, and I agreed. That's unlike me. Usually I just do what I want. And the more they say no, the more I want.
Got yard work done and removed the screens from the pots SO got me. Dog wash, slow walk, denial of trip to SAL and that was a WIN!
NUMERICS For rest week: 5:47
SWIM none haha
BIKE 40 miles
RUN 14.1 miles
COMMUTE 27.4 miles
WALK 3 miles or so on track

Rocking Greenrock, then rocked out!
RUN 10.1 miles in 2:19. Ave HR 141 bpm, Max 159
Run cadence high 165-168 ish.
On May 18 I did this loop in 2:35, ave HR 140. On April 20th in 2:43, ave HR 119 (huh, walking!).
So this is pretty good! On these previous runs I walked a lot of the last 1-2 miles. This time I moved more in the last miles and kept a better pace. To me this is improvement.
I woke up not feeling great, but wanting trail. My options were Greenrock or the Mound, I went for the former figuring it would limit me in distance. I didn't need more than the 10 miles specified in the plan. I don't need to be beat up on a tough trail like Greenrock either, but...
Only nutrition was 2 hammer gels left over in my flask from D2D and 1-2 of my newly acquired Powerbars. MUCH better than the candies I was getting before. So like at D2D I ate only a few times instead of nibbling the entire way. I think it's a mental thing.
Usually I'm slow on Dogwood, but this time run it fast and smooth. My energy the first two miles was rock solid. It faded out a bit around 3 miles and any ideas of maybe doing 10+ today faded.
All felt great, no falls, good focus, think I run better without the podcasts in my ear (but my mind doesn't do so well). My coughing came and went but wasn't bad enough to slow me. It was hot but not really HOT, my clothes were wet enough to wring water out! My left hip had discomfort again, the same spot from Wednesday in the upper illiac crest area. Not down in the hip joint.
Stopped at walmart on the way home, a bit limpy! Mouthwash, chips for the dog (ripply instead of wavy, but SO said I need kettle cooked). M'd the yummy chocolate rice cakes with neuf cheese (UGH), shower, and slowly over the next hours started to feel awful. Tired. Wiped. Pained. Coughing. Got a sense that I was overheated and/or dehydrated. I drank liters of water from my bottle, didn't pee much like you'd think I would for all that water, so just kept drinking.
But by 4pm I was suffering. Multiple pained areas, mostly joints. Some in my back. And tired as all fuck. My resting HR was high at bedtime at 77 bpm, and I just crashed out wondering if I have the flu, or more heat-symptoms like I had from that late July Greenrock run in 2016. That was way hotter and way longer, but I'm less fit and still recovering.
Measured my body temp at bedtime at 100.5F. Warm but not feverish.
Garmin reports Friday RHR at 52 before bedtime. Saturday (wore the watch overnight) at mid-70s, dropped to mid-60s around 930pm and stayed there until midnight. Sunday stayed in the 60s until I woke up, then back down to low-50s by the end of the day. Wow!
Run cadence high 165-168 ish.

Dark2Dawn recovery week
Monday
BIKE 20 miles in 1:25
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
To my surprise I did the TGP bike ride with BE Monday morning. I was slow and lacked spark, but I did it. No specific pains, just tired. The commute was also tired and lacked energy. Of course it did! I also have a rough cough going, sometimes productive. Feels really low in the lungs, not upper in the sinuses. Producing a super thick yellow yuck.
Tuesday
WALK 60 mins, 3-4 miles?
COMMUTE 4.8 to/from track, and 2 to/from work
I walked at the track, I honestly didn't have any run in me. At all. It was very humid and warm, that didn't help. BE and I walked, enjoyable, but after 45-50 mins I was feeling ready to quit. Wow!
SO has been saying to shut it down for a week. That it's too much. I accept this morning that he's right, and I drive to work. Used the opportunity to get my Walgreen's rx and stop by Schnucks -- when I was there Sunday post-race that were selling my Powerbars on Clearance!! I looked for them last week online and at Target Saturday. Nice find! I have enough for this year and maybe the next, lol. Not like they go bad. And WIN for not snacking on them. Bad for BDF.
Met with LC for lunch at Chic Fil A. She was celebrating her 4th place podium at Steelhead, her hubby's race. She asked about cardiologist, we talked SCAD and what it means. I'm still in denial.
New moon at 2:17pm. And some t-storms, but they didn't reach my garden. Went home and M'd a few of the Gatorade bars, they tasted pretty bad. Maybe they'd taste better after a run? But ugh. M'd. But not bad? Denial.
Later this night, I was petting my Shooga-Boo and found a remarkably large lump (half a orange-ish sized) under her jaw. Hidden under her ear flap and in the waddle of skin under her jaw. Oh man. Call vet in morning. A quick google search says salivary gland cyst or lymph node involvement. No worry until dx'd.
Wednesday
RUN 4 mile in 42 mins, 10:40 m/m, ave 137 bpm, ave 169 spm
COMMUTE only 2 miles to/from work
I was determined to see how a run would feel, even though I'm still having this cough that hurts now. And it's HOT out, super heavy air. On previous runs I've fought the temptation to run loops around BP. Doesn't it sound shorter to run 10 loops of about a mile, than it does to run 10 miles all around neighborhood? Well today was the perfect day to test that. Loops around BP would give me the opportunity to drop if I started feeling like shit.
Who am I kidding. Feel like shit or not, I'm running 4 miles.
And I did! Slow, took my time, walked 45-50 seconds after each mile. My HR was still pretty high for this, so recovery still ongoing. My left IT was painful at the start but this shook out after a mile. However after the run, my left hip hurt. So much so that I was almost limping all day. So I didn't bike it, drove like yesterday and biked up from Fo Pa.
Sugar goes to the vet in 1.5 hours. I'm still at lab running a PCR gel. Not worried on her yet. And sneezing these painful and powerful sneezes. Not sure if I'm going to make it home for the holiday, between this and the dog. Time will tell.
Vet update: could be ear infection, lung infection, not likely salivary cyst, and hopefully not lymphoma. No kennel for doggie, no trip home for me.
Thursday
BIKE 81 mins and 20 miles in TGP, afternoon after work
Woke up not feeling good. Not even good enough to join my Thursday run group! Now that's a sign that things aren't too great -- don't even want to run!?
Spent day at lab doing mouse work, my usual Thursday gig these days. Once I got home I had energy to burn. This felt OK, but kinda low energy. And the park was full of idiots gathering for their picnics and music. So my pace was slowed so I didn't hit an idiot. Intervals: 18:11, 18:24, 18:43 mins.
Friday
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
Still not feeling great. I had an idea of running today, skip or bike tomorrow, then run Sunday to get my miles in but with a break in between. Nope. Didn't feel it. Wow! My cough continues, a low in the chest messy-sounding but only somewhat productive cough. Worse when I lay down. Ugh.

100K: Badger or Shippey?
I'm undecided on my 100K! I'm sure I want to do one, but now I have two to choose from. Yesterday I found that there's a brand new St Louis 100K race on the same weekend. Much less travel, no hotel, but hills. Starts at 6pm and has 3 loops. What do I do!?
Badger: 6 hr drive each way, $190 registration, $130-ish hotel, flat, family, 33 hour cut-off, day start, miss a few days of work, fees to board dog
Skippey: 1 hour drive, $162 registration, $0 hotel, 7500 vert, local, 32 hour cut-off, 6pm start, done on Saturday, miss only Friday at work, maybe one night boarding of dog depending on my finish time.
UUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHH biggest concern is the heart. Healed or not healed, haha, I have to follow the rules of recovery. The hills of Shippey are problematic, but a night start for cool weather is a good balance. The flat of Badger is great, but the potential for daytime heat could be problematic.
The heat is a given. It will be hot regardless. It will be hot at the and of Shippey since I won't finish until mid-day. I keep typing Skippie. It's Shippie.
LOVE me some trails. LOVE me night running. LOVE me hills. LOVE me saving $$.
But Badger is a better simulator for the Hennepin race.
Talk to TV tomorrow at lunch.
Badger: 6 hr drive each way, $190 registration, $130-ish hotel, flat, family, 33 hour cut-off, day start, miss a few days of work, fees to board dog
