RUN 5 miles in about 1 hour, track run with drills
BIKE COMMUTE 13.8 miles, track n back, lab n back
BE said something great during the run that at the time I wanted to use as my post title. But I soon enough forgot what he said! Evidence of how good the run was, and how fast the conversation moved :)
We did running drills -- gravevines, march, skip, etc -- either on the straights or the turns, and jogged in between. Last time we did this about a month ago I could feel the soft tissues in my legs and feet, I expect the same after today. But I was mindful of being gentle in the skips and I've got a lot more miles under my belt this time.
Today is the first real day of running for my training plan. What am I training for again? I'm not sure MT50 happens this year. I'd like to do 24 The Hard Way. I plan on doing SH100K. However it turns out, I'm in training. This run was a great way to start it.
We've been in a rain-rut this week. Getting a/o expecting rain Monday through Thursday. On the bike home yesterday, right as I turned on Arsenal, I had a genius thought. RUN COMMUTE tomorrow! Avoid the run, get a TAD in, and it's May and I love starting new things at the top of a month. This works with the training plan, as BE is running the short loop tomorrow in prep for his sprint tri this weekend. The plan says 4+5+7 for the week. I'll be at 5+9+___ Thursday morning, assuming I run commute tomorrow.

Training is the systematic removal of excuses
BIKE 19 miles in TGP, 3 intervals
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
Where did my extra mile go? Usually I get 20 miles from this ride?!
Whatever, a cool morning but dry and calm. Rain expected later (it never rained later). I was a few mins later than my usual 5:55 am arrival due to reading Reddit for Game of Thrones news -- the big battle episode was last night!
BE had his P2 out for a shakedown before this weekends sprint in St Petersburg. We talked about our usual random lot of topics -- today included vegan recipes and foods like tofu and tempeh; my swimming concerns and how they are likely mental, he quoted the title above and I agree with him; oooh man we talked more but I can't recall right now! He encouraged me to join the Whispering Hills swim on Sundays with the Club. Good idea. See if I can get myself to re-arrange a run or a ride for that. Hmmm......
3 loops:
1 18:17 130bpm
2 17:54 133 bpm
3 17:55 134 bpm
Higher bpm due to talking? The speed and times were similar. Yesterday's loops on same course and pace were mid-120s HR. Fatigue, dehydration, etc.

32 mile week. And "you'll be okay".
RUN 2.7 miles in 27 mins, 10:09 m/m ave HR 130, ave cad 173
BIKE 30 miles in 2 hours (below)
I slept awful overnight and needed a benedryl to sleep. My legs and body were restless and kinda achy. Duh, half mary.
The run was adjusted for overages earlier in the week, the goal was 32 miles and I certainly didn't need more. So as a reward of sorts I cut short to 2.7 for an even 32 total. Whoop! My HR still seems really high for the effort? But happily my cadence is pretty good.
After some stomach upset (both overnight, before, and after the run) I left for the ride. I really wanted to ride Babler, but see below for the full discussion on that. Instead I did 4x the TGP loops. Rode the first one backwards and soon realized why I don't ride that direction -- the turns cross traffic.
All felt great, didn't push a pace and kept it "steady": The interval is 4.6 miles, I ave'd just under 16 mph on each. Ooof that feels slow.
1 17:54 127 bpm
2 17:45 129
3 18:00 127
4 17:55 126
After the loops, rode to work, and then some extra blocks got my full 30 miles. I joked that I should have gone to the pool for 300 yards so I could have a 3 miles, 30 mile, 300 yard day. But instead I did gardening -- got all my seeds in!
So about Babler. After my run Saturday I happily texted SO my news, and he said "You're overdoing it". (ignoring the fact that he got up at 3am for a 100 mile ride...haha). I replied, I love it too much. He simply said, OK. Hmmmmm so I think for a while. Say that I take his advice seriously, acknowledged the saw one of the attacks, said I haven't found the balance yet.
He said, listen to doctor, and "I don't know much". I disagreed!! I talk to him because I trust his opinion. So this really got me thinking the rest of the day.
Later on he told me about his new wheel, looks super nice, chatted about how it's not the equipment it's the rider. That's always been my rationale, that and my budget. I said I don't need equipment - I need to learn to swim. He said, "swim more. kick more. push the water like you mean it. Not like walking sugar." LOL!! Oooh TV says the same thing to me, haha!
Then soon after, I confessed that I'm nervous to swim again. Might be the first time I've said it to him? He replied, "It's OK. Get clear from doctor. Swimming is hard on the heart".
! I told him that's the most encouraging thing I've heard since this started. And that I wanted to hug him. He replied, "You'll be okay. just talk with doctor. swimming does make the heart pump more.
This series of conversations really struck me, it was a bit of push and pull, back and forth advice, but I'm taking it seriously. Hence changing my ride from Babler to TGP.

Half Mary for the WIN!
RUN 13.1 miles in 2:12, 10:04 m/m
Ave HR 142
Ave cad 172
WOW, this was a major benchmark for me. It was supposed to be a 12 mile run, that I thought might turn into a 10-12 based on my fatigue the days before. But nope nope nope. I also thought I'd run this on a trail, yearning for some Lost Valley, but decided an alternating weekend plan of trail/nottrail would be a good ramp up strategy. Besides, I'm not sure I could do 10-12 on a trail yet. Last weekend's "10 miler" on Greenrock as evidence for that.
It was also supposed to rain later in the morning, but it never really did for my run. A few sprinkles, that's about it. So optimal running weather.
I picked FoPa for it's 6-mile path (under construction so our Thursday runs have been 6.1) and because I could run it both directions, have facility support, and could drop out if I needed to. But nope nope nope. In fact, once I realized I was coming in close to 13 due to some overages I kept going. Then kept going to 13.1 just because.
Carried the Camelbak handheld, emptied only twice. Ate maybe half a gel. Not much! Not enough?
No sharp chest pain, no other body pain except that spot in my left shoulder/back that Dr L worked on. A painful burning pinpoint of pain. Oof.
Felt great, awesome, and the rest of the day went good. Sometimes after a run I'm too mentally wiped to run errands, but today went to HD for tomato plants and garden flowers. Spent my $50 gift card from work, the bill came to $50.08 so all my plants only cost 8 cents. Three of the dianthus flowers I got were inspired by the garden in front of the FoPa VC. Bright pink on long stems. Bring in the h-birds and b-flys!
I had a great day, and around 830am SO texts that he's done with his 100 mile ride. Ugh, jealous. Not of getting up at 3am to get that done, but of being able to ride that far. Soon.

Friday -- REST!
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
SO suggested an extra loop in the park if I can. I'd love too! But my time runs short today.
Dedicated rest day. Went to bed fast and early last night, only to have the doggie wake me at 4am to pee. Gave her a few bits of brekkie then back to bed until 6:50 when she started whining again. She's right, I need to get up, but uuugghhh. This is my only sleep-in morning!!
Plans for the weekend: a 12+4 run on the schedule. I'll say 10-12 for Saturday, see about Sunday. I'd like to ride Sunday, maybe another try at Chesterfield and Babler.
I'm now 1 week without the D and the M. M keeps trying to sneak his way back in, and D mostly fails when he tries. I really feel better without them, and my body is reflecting the difference already.
My eye still bloody, and in the last day or two has nearly completely encircled my iris. Should it still be spreading? And my chest pain is less, but I still have the cold/pounding feeling a lot, sometimes a minor pain. Maybe I'm just paying too much attention to it. ?

Keep Pushing, around Fo Pa
RUN 6.1 miles in 57 minutes, 9:24 m/m, and 147 bpm
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
Compared to yesterday's 6.21 mile run: which was 10:57 and 135.
Ran this with BE and IT. It seemed uphill the entire way! It was a cool, calm, post-rain run -- no better weather and no better company than 2 friends who willingly slowed down so I could try to drop the HR. I walked only once, the HR came right down, but I think too the mental aspect of knowing my HR is up, and the fight to keep up with the group all contribute to a few beats. ??
And as for chest pain -- better. So I think it was the Saturday Episode, maybe I pulled or irritated something? But I'm continuing to have (and kinda always have, sometimes more or less is all) a racing heart feeling, and/or a pounding feeling, like anxiety or adrenaline. Sometimes a cold pulling feeling in chest, sometimes a pain like I was just punched with a sharp object in the ribs.
Or as BE said, do I just hang what I can on those words?

Waaaayyyy too tired around TGP
RUN 6.1 miles in 1:07. 10:57 pace, ave HR 135. Some walking.
COMMUTE 9.2 miles
WOW, way too tired/worn out/??? in today's run. WTF? I wanted to go, wasn't motivational. I ate too much and bogged myself down? Or I just need more rest after Saturday's 10 mile trail run?
Whatever it was, wow. I did my favorite TGP loop with the bird trail. No music because even that was too much energy. I walked occasionally, only for maybe 10-20 seconds at a time. My quads are tired, and it's probably contributing to poor form.
Get to bed! Get some good food! Get rest!
