BIKE 45 mins indoors, roughly 13 miles?
Messed up day! First off I slept in, the FIRST time in weeks that I've slept through the night! My head cold really improved during Wednesday, that really helped. So when I snoozed the alarm until 5:30, it was both good and bad. Hate to miss the run!
So I did an indoor bike instead. Was going to ride outdoors but it stormed overnight and all those pretty white flowers had blown off the trees. It was slick to walk the dog! So while boring, this was the safer bet.
No bike commute since I had to drive to appt with Dr M. I'm scheduled for and EMG tomorrow. Worked first with med student, then his PA (first time with him, like!) and he noted absence of muscle over my shoulder blade, used me like a teaching opportunity for the student (showed her the need to challenge athletes more than a light press), and explained everything. I also had a bad result with a neck nerve root compression test?! A Spurling Test? Ouch! So an EMG tomorrow to see what's going on. Ugh.
LOTS of walking today! 18K steps. Is this thing accurate?! Two dog walks, two trips to truck in FoPa, 4 stair climbs....wow!

Headcold. Ben. Disney Shit.
RUN 8.4 miles in 1:20*
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5
*It depends on who you ask. I brought my phone to track for the Steps Challenge at work. The phone said 8.4 in 1:25. The Garmin said 8.3 in 1:20. I think the Garmin auto-pause works better, and I like the longer distance :)
Was a good run, even with the head cold. Another night of poor sleep. I woke up at least 6 times to blow out crap, and btw it's an amazing amount of crap! I was worried about running with it, I'd be stopping every half mile at the rate I was going after I got out of bed! So gross.
But to my surprise I only needed to stop once. and the only time I coughed was when I stopped! And the only reason I stopped was to take a picture of the BREATHE painted on the path in TGP. Been wanting that pict since I saw it weeks ago!
Felt good, no rib pain this run. I was more distracted with sore glutes and hammies from Monday's strength training! Listened to TJM interviewing the woman behind Vanessa Runs. Great stories!
Last night was a bad night. The evening to be specific. After dealing all day with the head cold, getting home cold and tired, I skipped my H D 3C habit goal and ate a random standing dinner while Blerching! Ugh. So I was sick to my stomach from that. Then I get an email about running friend BR - I ran by their house in the old neighborhood yesterday and contacted them - and learned he had Stave IV colon cancer! Then I get a Disney email, that just tipped me over the edge and I mentally crumped. Well I was crumped anyway, sick to my stomach and unhappy.
I found a great quote from a new-to-me book called Hope For Flowers:

I started an Excel scheduling sheet
RUN 4 miles in 35 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
The run felt good. I was up a lot overnight (as I have been the past week) with lots of congestion from this ongoing head cold. It's getting worse?! When you start marveling at just how much your sinuses can produce... And when you start seeing lots of blood, yeah, you start wondering.
But little to no rib pain. Only when I sit up from reclined, when I use my arms to get into sitting position, when I roll the truck window up and down, that's about it. Not even strength training bothered it yesterday.
So with the sun shining, spring sprung, rib and shoulder on the heal, I'm eagerly starting to plan my spring summer training. Dr M encouraged me to get back to triathlon to balance things out. Can't say I miss the pool but I certainly miss my bike! Poor Frea is STILL parked in the basement. Big Shark has her ready to roll, just a case of doing it.
My Excel sheet has my current and my next schedules, a comparison of the 50M and 100M running plans, my PT sessions, commute plans, etc. Now I'm adding in goals: speed work, midweek ride, long run and long ride. I've mentioned to TH and LC that I'm looking for weekend rides.
There's a lot of apprehension on my part on joining a group ride, I really don't know where I stand on my abilities! Slow? Short? It's all relative, but it's safe to say here that I'm slowerer and shorter than I'd like to be, and than I'm used to being. Maybe this weekend I'll hit the MCT with Frea and see how it all feels.
Stuff to input in the schedule: at least one swim, maybe Monday morning or Thursday after the run? Run speedwork on Tuesday morning? A midweek ride other than the mentoring ride on Tuesday nights? And a long run/long ride weekend schedule.
I'm wasting time at work!

Now if only I had a pumpkin
STRENGTH 1hr
Visited with Dad today, he came to lab meeting, then late brekkie, then some basement cleanup, then appt. Miss him already!
The title line comes from his comment after his appt, when we looked over the rails and down 6 floors to the atrium of the medical building where a pianist and flutist (?) were playing. A pumpkin! LOL!
Second personal training today: kettlebell swings 10# with one arm OK, squat thrust with over head press NOT OK (coulda taken some teeth out with a wandering left dumbbell!), more deltoid/rhomboid shoulder work OK, hamstring OK, leg press OK (and LOVE), split squats OK but wobbly on right leg, cable curls NOT OK my left elbow kept wandering backwards, and what else...might be it.
At first I'm disappointed that I barely break a sweat and it seems slow. But then I realize that done my way I HURT after strength training! I'm doing it wrong! So this is good, and he's balancing focused moves, still in testing, but now working on the right/left hip imbalances left from the surgery.
Overheard at PT: It's a long way to the top, if you want to rock n roll...

Weekend Roundup
Saturday RUN 5.9 miles in 50 mins with TV at CCP
Sunday RUN 10.1 miles in 1:41 around town
Yeah, I ran an extra 0.1 mile on Sunday to make an even number. What of it?
Saturday I took Shoogs with me, the plan was to have MP walk her while we ran. In the 50 mins, she only got 7700 some-odd steps. Haha! A Baggins-Basset is not made for being your exercise dog. It made me so happy not only to be running, but to have our "SO's" be a part of the day too, instead of them staying home. Put a smile on my face to see them walking.
The run felt good, the higher pace and talking taxed the chest a bit. I had a sharp tingly feeling in the left shoulder area, I guess in the deltoid-to-pectoral connections?
Last night I ate some rice to fuel the weekend. I was dragging Friday, tired and unmotivated. Not helping that I don't have a full-busy schedule at work (that sucks energy out of me) and still battling a head cold.
Sunday's run was going to be a 6 miler but it was too nice out and I was feeling good. So my Easter run hopped longer than planned. I took it easy, didn't push but didn't walk either. This hurt less than Saturday's run mostly because I wasn't needing extra air to breath and talk!
YAY for a 16 miler weekend, and a nearly 25 mile week :)
I need to decide on Poto 30M soon. Not sure it's a great idea, but hate to miss it! Maybe find another race?
Dad comes into town tonight!

A different type of PT
STRENGTH: 1 hour!
BIKE COMMUTE 9.5 miles
More walking, but I'm not really going to count that
Wow, where to begin. At the top I guess. Today was my first (evah!) personal training session with JG. It was a mild, relatively simple, where-am-I-at, type of session to gauge weaknesses and pains. The focus was most all arms and shoulder. Lots of left arm weaknesses as expected, it's the reason I'm doing this! Not knowing what to expect going into this had me a little apprehensive but that's gone. I'm signed up for a month. Expensive, but that's why I'm not doing internet and cable and stuff like that. To pay for what I'd really rather be doing.
I almost didn't do the bike commute. Say what? It was 40F outside! My warm clothes were put away. Didn't feel like doing it. But I did feel like it, and did it, and have zero regrets. What a lazy way of thinking.
And the ride home will be nice, it's now just over 50F out there. Full sun. Not a cloud in the sky!
I had a long morning, kept waking up all night from discomfort and needing to pee. Back in my bad for the first time in since Monday since the doggie was OK on the steps. Bad dreams, that mild head cold messing up the back of my throat, and that even entered my dream! My alarm was for 5am but I needed more, sadly the dog didn't think so. Then instead of just an egg I wasted the time munching a little, then my stupid gut made we wait 30+ mins before it was "done". It was like this past NY revisited :( This is becoming more frequent, not sure of the cause, but I really need to look into it.
I stopped at Walgreen's and walked the doggie at LP on the way home, went right up for a shower, ate a lame brekkie, delayed...didn't leave until 930! WHAT?! Granted I didn't get home until after 830, so a one hour turn around ain't that bad. But that can't keep happening.
The PT session perked me up, having worked muscles makes me mentally feel better and stronger. On the dog walk I was devising ways of incorporating the sessions into my workouts. Bike or run to my Monday evenings? It's only 5 miles round trip. If I do that, I don't run Tuesday morning but rather do a bike workout? Then what about Tuesday speedwork? Ha, life so complicated.

Short loop group Thursday run
RUN 41.5 mins and 4.7 miles
No bike commute, but I did get my lunch walk in!
I excitedly emailed the Thursday group yesterday, saying I was joining for an easy paced short loop. To my surprise, most everyone replied back that they want to go short too! LC feeling ill, IT doing a 10K this weekend, JA's financee S had potential injury, CS with injury, DC traveling, JA busy studying, and DT unknown. Newcomer Charlie joined, but I think he was healthy! (But see below!).
Beautiful morning, it was supposed to be raining and t-storming but nothing but super light rain if any. Calm and warm, like yesterday I was able to wear shorts.
Late into the run, CE shared his story of falling in the Tetons last summer: 10 broken ribs, broken pelvis and collarbone, all after a 150? ft fall! Two off duty EMT's saw him fall and helped him, then an avalanche of snow fell on him! Am I'm complaining about my stupid rib?!?!?!? STFU, right? He's one lucky SOB. I'm glad he's OK :)
More rain after the run, tough winds, and dropping temps. My afternoon walk was 10F colder and wiiiiindy. Good thing I didn't ride in, even though today would have an awesome tailwind on the way home!
