Suit up, show up, something with happen -- tjd

SWIM 1600y in 45 mins
Snow, so no bike

Tom said the above -- so with that in mind (and the reward of pork rinds if I did the full 45 mins...my carrots are a little different!) I suited up and showed up. Unlike last week!

But to my dismay they were refilling the pool or something so it was cold at the shallow end, hotter about 1/3 of the length in, then comfortable the rest of the way. So a full round trip would be cool, hot, comfy, turn, comfy, COLD, cold. It was terribly distracting. And hit the body hard as it was kind of a shock to hit the cold spot. The temp changes were made worse for me by the relative temps -- not sure I'm explaining this correctly. It was also like going into and out of AC and heat really fast, except water has a bigger effect than air. Ugh, so bad I was resting in the deep end where the water was warm. When I left the pool was empty, and Anton said others were unhappy too. Ah well. It's Done!  I did a WU then 5x200 as pull-swim-pull-swim with each 200 focused on one drill. As much as I could focus on a drill with that distraction.

Snow! A very pretty snow too, driving by TGP was a treat. The trees and ground were coated with a sticky clean snow that was gone by the end of the day. There's some major weather system in the northeast, a n'oreaster or something like that, and the Weather Channel is making up stuff about a Bomb-something storm system. Why do I click on those stupid videos?!

Week Summary, missed my swims!

Tuesday RUN 6.35 miles in 1:02
              BIKE COMMUTE 9.2
Wednesday BIKE COMMUTE 9.2
Thursday RUN 6.3 mils with DC and his intervals, 55 mins 8:44m/m
               BIKE COMMUTE 9.2 miles
Friday BIKE COMMUTE 13.3 miles
Saturday rest
Sunday RUN 9.2 miles, work commute

You'll note that I'm missing the Weds and Fri swims. Just didn't have it in me to do them. Lazy? Tired? Cold outside....

But on Friday I did the YMCA bike route anyway, even though I didn't go into the YMCA. Super big headwind that day, the 9 miles to work was brutal.

Saturday was a full day at work, Skyped with Tom!

The Sunday run felt great, 4.3 to work then 4.6 home, all easy and with the HR strap so I'm getting gooder data. I see a brief high HR during the warm up then it drops into the 120's. Nice. Today was not only Daylight Savings but also a full moon!

Garmin has "opened a case" on the Garmin. Wonder how long that takes to resolve?

NUMERICS
Swim 1600 yards
Bike 52 miles
Run 21.8 miles

Guess it was a rest week?

Swim felt good!

SWIM 1600y in 45 mins
BIKE COMMUTE 11 miles

The lazy part of my mind tossed out the idea of skipping the swim so "I could rest" but I knew better than to fall for that banana in the tailpipe!

This swim felt good - 200S, 200P, 200K, 200S, then 200 choice backstroke and kickboard. MS was 6x {50 pull, 50 swim} each focused on a drill. Feel how it feels with the pull buoy then swim the same feeling. Drills were simple and basic: front quadrant, wide entry, head position, breathing.

I noted last week that my out of breath feeling is usually due to me running out of breath, not running out of muscle. My ME is weak, but that's not my primary reason.

Left hip still feels good!

Running, strapped.

Saturday RUN 6.3 miles in 57 mins. Ave HR 151
BIKE 6.8 miles TGP loop and two errands
Sunday RUN 10 miles in 1:44, ave HR 131, to work and back.

Saturday I started out at work then did the FoPa loop ahead of the Frontrunner's meeting. I haven't mentioned this yet but I did find my old Garmin HR strap and put a new battery in. Happily it works! So this is my first run with the new Garmin being tested with a strap for HR.

Started out and I thought the strap would override the optical. Nope, or at least I don't think so. I got buzzed for high HR. Turn off optical. Reset. Go. More buzz. Stop. Turn off alarm. Reset. Go. Ugh.

Once that was all out of the way I just tried to forget about it and run. I realized that my shiny new toy was taking some of the fun away from running, but that's only because I'm letting it do that.

The run felt forced I don't know that I ever really settled in? My mind was on the upcoming meeting, but my goal was to be Mindful of Training (one of my new Mindful March goals) so it was a 'wander away, reel it in' exercise too.

My left hip still hurting, I'm stretching and foam rolling and wondering what to do. The afternoon bike ride was 'just because'. Too nice outside, had stress to alleviate, and so I did a TGP loop before a stop at library and Jay.

Sunday I opted to run to work, even though I had doubts about the hip. The run felt great! Kept it easy, better focus than yesterday, and less forced. And to my surprise, the rest of the day (and still into Monday as I type) my hip feels better?! Huh!?

Numerics - haven't done these in a while!
SWIM 3500y
BIKE (all commute) 63.4 miles
RUN 28.6 miles -- last few weeks all 22 and under.

When CRISPR and running come together

RUN 6.3 miles in 57 mins, heck with the Garmin it tracked cadence. Again.
BIKE COMMUTE 9.2 miles

Ran with two other science nerds and by mile 2 we were talking about CRISPR/Cas. Loved it! But since I haven't heard the reference podcast yet I stayed out of it and let the young'uns talk while I ran slightly ahead of them.

I love hearing them talk about everything they're learning about running and training and triathlon and racing. That used to be me! Hope to get that energy back soon.

Met another runner at the end, he ran in group ahead of mine, who had Fenix 3. He suggested tightening my watch more.

Mindful March, Morning WIN

SWIM 1700 yards in 45 minutes
BIKE COMMUTE 13.25 miles, maybe more if I get time

I don't get into it here, but the last two days were really rough. Super low energy, no motivation, like living in sludge. Actually kinda like living in a bonk, that feeling I'd get in which I don't want to stand, sit, sleep, rest, get up, nothing. Like I just want to flip a switch and turn off for a period of time. Last night after dinner though I started feeling much better. So. Gotta wonder. If the low carb test needs to be adjusted. I did my 10 mile run Sunday and it's possible that it took until now to recover? I like to test things, guess this will be another test.

No Fruit February is done but will continue into March as a Fruit In Recipes Only test. No more bowls of berries and orange grabs. I know fruit was having an effect on my gut and cravings, but I miss it and just need to figure out my tolerance limits. Today my reward for this is buttery scrambled eggs with chopped dates and cinnamon. Half this morning, half tonight to really extend it.

I stuck to schedule and didn't skip the pool today. Arrived on time, overhead an employee of the Y say something remarkably insensitive about Ash Weds (he didn't like them 'walking around with that schmutz on their face, just wipe that shit off'....oh yeah I send an email to the Y about that), jumped in a lane with PG, and started off on my training plan for the morning. WU with 300 swim and 300 kick, then 6x100 of a 2-2-2 descending (2 at easy, 2 more less easy, 2 more least easy pace), then 6x50 the same. Thing is, I work harder but not faster!! So it's less easy but more messy.

One of my March goals is to get more Mindful. Today the roll was for water -- pay attention to the feel, sound, role it plays in life, etc. I realized while swimming that Ulmo probably never conceived of water being contained in a pool for the purposes of swimming.

My 100's were around 2 minutes, the 50's just barely under 1 minute. The fastest was 55 seconds. I found that a longer rest gave better form. No surprise there.

SUPER windy today, lots of storms last night (including tornadoes in Ottawa!) and left over from that is a strong west wind. Yay -- TAILWIND for the ride home.
